about

A song for, and informed by, my shark-obsessed sister.

lyrics

They're the
Greatest predator under the sea though they cannot float
From their bones, or lack thereof, to their babies
There's oh so much for you to know

Yes they're sharks
But they're really not quite that scary
They have many quirks
That can actually make them quite cool

A group of sharks is called a gam, herd, pod or shiver.
Sharks are the only animal that never get cancer
They have enamel on their skin and don't have scales That means if you rub a shark the wrong way you'll probably cut your hand up.
Bull sharks can live in freshwater and saltwater. They’re only shark that can do that.

Yes they're sharks
But they're really not quite that scary
They have many quirks
That can actually make them quite cool

Often sharks will bite people to "test" them out to make sure that they're edible. They have special senses in their teeth.
Sharks can go through up to 1000 teeth in a lifetime. They're constantly replaced. No matter what. Some sharks have 15 rows of teeth in their mouth at once.
Even though they're fish, most sharks give birth to live babies.
A particular type of shark's babies fight in the womb and only the strongest survive

Yes they're sharks
But they're really not quite that scary
They have many quirks
That can actually make them quite cool

Did you know, sharks are boneless. No bones. Just cartilage. Which means that usually if they stop swimming they will sink.
So in order to sleep they either shut off half their brain and keep swimming or lie on the seafloor.
Their brains are shaped like a Y, with the top bits going to each eye.

They're the
Greatest predator under the sea though they cannot float
From their bones, or lack thereof, to their babies
There's oh so much for you to know

Yes they're sharks
but they're really not quite that scary
They have many quirks
That can actually make them unique and cool in the world
